When people hear the name Gordie Howe, they remember that tough but graceful hockey player sporting the famous number 9, affectionately known as “Mr. Hockey.” In a career spanning twenty-six NHL seasons, he accomplished more than anyone could have ever imagined.

Today, a different legacy exists, where the goal is to reduce statistics versus creating them.

This is also his story.

OUR MISSION

To ensure dignity, support and education are provided to caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia related diseases so they are never alone on their journey.

Watch our short video to learn how our charity is moving caregivers from a place of fear and uncertainty to resilience and strength so they can live with, through and beyond their role as a caregiver.

YOUR IMPACT

Our Online Caregiver Community

Not only do we want people to acknowledge and recognize caregivers, our goal is also to empower them to take supportive action. Early in 2023, Gordie Howe CARES developed and launched an online engagement tool and community application for caregivers to share their experiences and ask questions.

Ripples is a tool for caregivers that explores the many faces and experiences of caregivers. It helps individuals identify their role within a care team, and helps family members, friends, and co-workers learn how to better support themselves and those around them.

Hotchkiss Brain Institute Research

Your generosity is funding the CAN-PROTECT study, led by Dr. Zahinoor Ismail and others at the University of Calgary who are researching the physical and emotional needs of caregivers and those living with dementia. Through their advisory input, Ripples creates support by reaching out into the dementia caregiver community, collecting stories and learnings from those who have experienced the caregiving journey.

Our Impact

See the impact that our effort has had, and the community of caregivers we’re helping to support.

For those providing the role of caregiver to someone affected by dementia, days can feel like they repeat themselves. The things you reminded loved ones of yesterday may be the same things you are reminding them of again today.

Through Gordie Howe CARES, caregivers can put themselves in a position to better support themselves and their loved ones. Now, days can have more wins than losses.

It’s time to turn day one into day won.

CAREGIVING IS A TEAM SPORT

Your generosity supports caregivers to live healthier and fuller lives, preparing our community for the future when millions more step into this role.

Gross contributions received totaled $1,800,000.00 for the 2024 year and we are hopeful that we will be able to raise more this year. The cost to raise these funds are primarily tied to our large annual fundraising event, The Gordie Howe Pro-Am which cost us $844,278.41 in 2024.

All donations are used towards one of our three core areas of focus: Research funding for the CAN-PROTECT study, ongoing education for caregivers through the Ripples of Care site and to our new Caregiver and Patient Support program; regardless of the amount received funds are used towards the 3 primary areas of support.

No direct cost are involved in the solicitation of your funds nor does the charity currently compensate any employees whose principle duties involve fundraising.

Your support directly impacts the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how your donation is being utilized or if you'd like to become more involved in our initiatives.
